UPDATE
.
I was at Walmart on November 20,2025 and while not shopping for groceries, I couldn't resist price comparing a few items I had purchased at Dollarama.
Luncheon Meat (Great Value) 340g cost $0.23 more per can Dollarama's luncheon meat (Elite) 340g ($2.25). Also, the Elite brand at Dollarama had an expiry date of Aug 2030 (4yrs 9mos) while Walmart's Great Value brand had an expiry date listed at June 2027 (1yr 7mos). I don't know if this is a very old batch Walmart is trying to sell or if their product somehow has a lower expiry date. I will monitor this over my next few visits to the store. Regardless, Dollarama's Elite Luncheon Meat at $2.25 is clearly the winner over Walmart at $2.48 - and the expiry date makes all the difference if you are trying to store food for the long term.
Walmart's Hereford Corned Beef (340g) $3.44 Rollback (Reg. $4.97) was cheaper than Dollarama's in-house brand Corned Beef (340g @ $3.75ea) - however, that is only because it was on sale. So, normally Dollarama beats out price wise, but if it's on sale at Walmart you can get a known name brand for cheaper than Dollarama. It also had a similar expiry date. Therefore, Walmart is the one to check while shopping and if it's on sale, back up the truck and buy lots, especially since this is a product with a long shelf life (up to 5yrs?).
Walmart actually did have the same brand of Cooked Ham (Mario's) 340g but unfortunately the shelf was missing the price tag. They did have Maple Leaf Cooked Ham 454g that came to $6.27ea.. The Maple Leaf brand is $0.0138105 per gram while at Dollarama Mario's brand is $0.011029411 per gram. Dollarama beats out Walmart in this instance, however it would be worthwhile for me to check closer the Mario's brand at Walmart, as well as watching for cooked ham on sale at Walmart. A 454g tin of cooked ham at the Dollarama price per gram would be $5.00 ea.. Therefore any sale at Walmart - especially of a higher name brand - that is less than $5.00ea is a buying opportunity, especially since this is another product with a long shelf life of up to five years.
Walmart's Flaked Light Tuna (Great Value) 120g is $1.24ea., or $0.01033333/g. Dollarama's (Pacific Pride) 91g is $1.00ea., or $0.01098901/g. Walmart wins. It's not a large difference, but if Walmart goes on sale, buy multiple cans. Another plus side to Walmart is the higher volume tins will most likely store easier (more) on a shelf. .
